About
the Education Center
The
Redington Conservation Education Center is a non-profit
(501(c)3) organization that is funded by the State of Arizona
from
sources such
as the
Environmental License plate fund. It is also funded by the NRCD and
through tax-deductible donations from individuals and from grants. The
Education Center is governed by the NRCD Board of Directors and other
individuals appointed to the Board. The Board meets twice a year to
plan activities and educational programs.
What
is environmental education?
As
employed by the Redington NRCD, environmental education consists of
educational programs for school children, landowners and the general
public to explain how the natural environment functions and how
rational land management can provide economic and aesthetic benefits
to people while protecting ecological productivity and environmental
quality for the future. Education programs carried out over the past
few years include:
- Workshop on
building wildlife
escape ramps
for water sources.
- Bat house
building workshop.
- Workshop
on erosion
control.
- Financial
Contribution to Arizona Cooperative Extension to provide a Water harvesting workshop
in the
District.
- "On the
Ranch" field trip for students
from a local school to learn
about local food production and history of the area.
- Rock dam
workshops - Two workshops have been held to acquaint local people
with for loose rock dams and techniques of proper construction.
- Financial
contribution to the Arizona Cooperative Extension program to provide
a Master
Watershed Steward Program in
the Redington District.
- Scholarships
for
cooperators who attended the Master Watershed Steward program in the
District.
- Environmental
Workshops for Teachers and Students - Each year the Redington NRCD
sponsors one or more high school students and school teachers to
attend week-long environmental workshops sponsored by the University
of Arizona Extension, Society for Range Management or other groups.
- Support for
Envirothon - a science based competition for students.
- Financial
contribution to RC&D for printing of natural resource handbooks.
